I contacted BYTECC and was told that the ones returned to them had been damaged by plugging in the power incorrectly, which I believe. I reported the reliability problem and didn't hear back.Makes one a 'believer' in just how this product could be both convenient and efficient.Im also 'out' a very important hard drive with valuable data on it. Oh well. Don't be brave and purchase this product. It'll make a fool out of you.-as it did me!(self critique here)The USB connector seems to have issues or something. I would plug it in, and half the time nothing would happen. I would try repeatedly and then sometimes it would come on, but only at USB1 speed, which is ungodly slow. I've now done that and after a lot of USB plug hopping got System Profiler and Disk Utility to recognise the drive (and partitions in the case of DD). It still won't mount in Finder and DiskWarrior reports: 'Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-36 2257)'. I've instructed Disk Utility to try to repair the disk and it's making a real meal of it (the stripy barber's shop progress indicator pole is revolving indefinitely without actually reporting success of any kind). Does your G1 have the latest firmware. If not, you defiantly need to update it. If it does have the latest firmware I would suggest a secure erase, which will bring performance back to new. (Unfortunately Intel chose to not provide TRIM support for G1 drives) To secure erase you can use hdderase.You will lose all data when you secure erase. If you make an image of the drive before you secure erase you can reinstall it afterwards and you will be good to go. If you have Win 7 you can make an image from the backup and restore panel. (Takes around 10 minutes to back up and 10 minutes to restore). Does it have any other controllers on board? (Look for different coloured SATA ports or refer to the mobo manual). If you can switch over to another controller try running HDDErase 4.0 on it. If not try removing any other devices and try again. If you are still stuck do you have access to another PC that you could try it on. One thing to be careful of. You must use the same hardware settings that were in place when you made the system image when you go to reinstall it. I have an ASUS board and it can boot from USB by the way. No idea why it said pciide before. At first google it looks like it's big advantage is passing along TRIM commands, which of course won't help someone who foolishly bought Intel's version 1!. More reading suggests that it's only for RAID folks. So I guess I'm stuck until I can secure erase the thing. As for USB boot, the ASUS manual says nothing and the web is conflicted. Also: Anyone who winds up here while looking for an ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 manual - don't bother with the ASUS site, it'll install bizarre chinese P2P software on your machine that won't uninstall, then fails to find the file. Making a bootable USB saves dealing with floppy drives and burning disks. It's a bit tricky to set it up but it's worth it in the long run. Here is a tutorial on how to do it. Once you have created it you need to extract the HDDErase files on to the USB drive. As you boot up keep hitting F8 and ASUS gives you a boot priority option. Select the USB drive. If you follow the above you will see a Windows 98 boot screen. Navigate to the command prompt, select the USB drive and type hdderase.exe and then follow the instructions. If you can't make a bootable USB just burn a bootable disk. (The more straight forward option). Once you have erased the drive performance will be back to factory condition. Due to the problems you have mentioned with the controller I'm going to suggest that you do a fresh installation rather than reinstall the image. If you do this I'd suggest that you F6 the RST 9.6 driver during set up. On a fresh install make sure you are in AHCI mode before you start and that the drive is plugged into an Intel SATA port. I appreciate this is all sounds complicated, but once you have sussed it out its quite easy and painless. Good luck! A much easier method for Asus motherboards it to just tap F8 when first booting and the memory is being initialized. Just before Windows starts loading, a Boot Menu will come up and allow one to boot from any device connected to the motherboard. So - Change of focus: 1) What NON-INTEL SSD should I purchase to replace this with. I intend to copy the disk image over and just replace it. 2) What (legal, nonviolent) creative thing should I do to dispose of my effectively useless INTEL XM-25 that will have the maximum possibility of getting some blog writeups and press attention.
