Fill the tank with just fresh water and brew through the entire tank to clean out any left over solution or mineral deposits that were loosened. It should not discourage you, it truly is minor, It only makes noise and vibrates when the pump turns on to fill the inner reservoir for heating and that only lasts 3 to 6 seconds. The heating and brewing are quite, not whisper, but quiet enough that you can't hear it a few feet away. The vibration does cause the coffee mug to move creating more noise.I also used it for under the coffee maker itself to help quiet it even more. Some reviews speak of splattering, I have had none besides maybe one or two on the back side of the brewer, behind the mug. This machine is great for coffee and tea but not for chocolate, the cocoa comes out way too weak, don't even try it, it's horrible for hot cocoa. Although you can dispense just hot water for making cocoa from a mix. I went to Breville.com and was able to download the user manual to better understand how it works, I recommend this. The Breville looks to be well made, it is a beautiful machine with its blue backlights and top quality stainless steel, there doesn't seem to be a cheap piece on it, the tray is plastic but I think that's it. After walking me through troubleshooting the brewer I was referred to the service center closest to us (in Ft. Worth TX). I called the service center today to find out how to get the water out of the inside of the unit so I could send it in for repair. When I expressed my displeasure the service center rep suggested that I call Breville to see if they would give me a discount on a new unit. This coffee maker has a stainless steel thermal carafe that will keep the coffee hot all day long. I've never seen anything like it. The unit is also very fast and you use your own grounds. This one, as a 10 cup coffee maker, is a keeper, and its clean up is quick and easy. But, then I spied the Breville BKC600XL and read up on its reviews, and decided on it instead. I bought it from Amazon and it arrived quite fast, in great condition. I set it up and tried to operate it and had a problem. With-in the same week I received a replacement.I set it up and had my first cup of coffee. The whole operation was simply amazing. The coffee maker is beautiful, well constructed, has all the bells and whistles that I was looking for and the blue lighting in the reservoir and the programable LCD screen is pure beauty. I sure love that rich blue tone. I am so amazed at the strong, beautiful aroma when my unit is brewing. Normally you don't get that kind of great aroma unless you stick your nose into a bag of freshly ground coffee. It's intoxicating, making one even more anxious for the end product. I also want to try out my good ol'e favorite coffee, Eight O'clock 100 Colombian. This one is the quietest by far and to improve it even more, I have anti-skid pads under the unit and just fold a piece of Viva paper toweling in half and put it under the cup. I use a tall 12oz. clear glass cup and therefore I don't have to worry about the splatter that some reviewers complain about. For me having the coffee really hot is important and this machine delivers cup after cup, of piping hot coffee. With all the single serve machine out there, you are mainly stuck buying the manufacturer's own-package coffee, and unfortunately even Breville K-cup's are not widely available at the store right now and can be expensive in the long run. Being single, I don't need 5 or 6 cups of coffee in the morning, I need one or two. Therefore, a single serve coffee machine is perfect for me. What do I like about this machine. Well, I like the look.You have a timer you can pre-set in the morning so the water is already h eated when you get up and the machine can also be shutdown automatically when you go to sleep or whenever you choose. Also, the machine is very easy to use and clean and this is a big plus for me. What I do not like about this machine. According to Breville's acutal description, the machine is using the Quiet Brew Technology and after using the machine the first time I thought the machine was pretty loud. the grounds spilling, the water dripping, waiting for the whole pot to brew.etc. When I had to cut down to having coffee only on the weekends for health reasons, brewing a pot of coffee for just my husband didn't make sense. My husband disliked making coffee more than me, so he started going to Starbucks on his way to work in the morning, which is an expensive alternative. This system is a dream to operate. The ample reservoir holds enough water that, for us, lasts two to three days. It can be filled with water at the sink, and it simply slides into it's compartment. We just pop in a coffee pod, press the brew button, and within a minute, we have p iping hot delicious coffee that fills the house with a wonderful aroma. (A bit of a problem for someone who has to cut down their caffein intake:-( ) The coffee pods care available from many manufacturers and in many flavors. This past weekend we ran out of pods. With the adapter that Breville supplied, we were able to brew coffee using our own coffee grounds instead of the pod. I also love the timing mechanism. You can set the machine to have the water heater on before you wake up, and turn off whenever you want. Otherwise, it takes a minute or two to heat the reservoir water. Style: When I researched these makers I went to Kuerig, which are similar in style and a lot less expensive. My kitchen, has white cabinets and stainless appliances, so I didn't want a black machine. The Breville's stainless steel exterior fits beautiful in my kitchen, and for me, it was worth the extra money (although I got a really great price on EBAY). Other than that, I would whole-heartedly recommend this system for anyone who wants a great cup of coffee with little hassle. It looks great and performs well, and has it's own storage for the my K-cup. The only draw back I can see is if you need to transport it, you can not totally get all the water out, which is probably true for every model like this. If you ever have to ship it to someone it probably won't matter, but if you order a NEW one on ebay and the package comes in dripping wet, then you know it isn't NEW. My NEW one ended up being used, but I'm growing to love it, even with it not being as advertised. You can also use it to heat water for tea, or instant oatmeal. You also have the option to use your own coffee with the m y K-cup. The unit has a nice look to it also, it looks good on the counter. We loved the idea of being able to use K-Cups AND our drip coffee brand. We bought one this year for our Christmas Present. Not only did we get a great deal on the price, we ARE SO PLEASED with the ease of operating the machine. Clean-up is virtually non-existent. Upkeep means refilling the water tank every 3 days or so. And now we can sample the many different K-Cups on the market. So nice to hit the kitchen and flip the switch to heat the water, THEN think about what type coffee you'd like that morning. I am a huge coffee drinker and this is by far one of the best purchases I ever made. Could never make the perfect cup at home. First off you just buy K-Cups and insert into machine. You get a perfect cup of coffee everytime and probably takes about 3 minutes. Open lid, take K-cup and dispose. Thats all there is too it.
