It is light, easy to use, and no cords to trip over. It is not quite as fast as a pneumatic nailer, but for household projects it is more than adequate. Once in great while it would mis-drive a cleat but the solution is to keep the magazine filled reasonably full. I coulnd't afford the pnuematic ones because of cost plus I don't own an air compressor. First overal impression was its sturdy construction, it's very well built. This should last me for years if I ever decide to lay hardwood floors again or if my friends need to borrow it. The mallet that is included is very robust and the weight and balance allows you to impart a nice blow to set the cleat. I have had a few times where I didn't give it a hard enough blow and I didn't set the cleat all the way down. This is the main complaint of this tool I found on the internet and some people prefer the ratcheting manual nailers. But, the complaint of the racheting manual nailers was it would jam if you tried to set the last cleat. The Bostitch has set every single cleat every single time. Hasn't jammed once. So, if I didn't set the cleat all the way on the first blow, I just grabbed my pliers and twisted the cleats head off. Didn't even try pulling it out. The head would fatigue right off at the wood level and I would set another cleat right next to it. So I guess for me, take your pick, take time to fatigue off the cleats unseated head or take time trying to unjam a nailer. In my opinion, a nailer shouldn't have problems with jamming and tools tend to get broken when this happens. Once getting used to the amount of force required to set the cleat, I pretty much set them every single time now. Also, with the heavy mallet, I can really get the wood up tight to the previous line. If I did do this for a living, I could tell that it would start to stress my wrists and tendons, hence thats the main advantage of the pnuematic nailers. But for the price, I'm quite pleased. The Bostich proved far superior to the Porta Nailer due primarily to the ratcheting feature on the Porta Nailer. This does not fuction well and is a poor design. The Porta nailer would leave cleats half driven or fail to release the cleat from the nailer after the cleat was fully driven. On the Porta Nailer side of the job we spent alot of time on our knees with a nail set trying to set cleats. We were forced to pull up a few planks becasue the cleats could not be set or removed. Eventually it was faster to just use the Bostich than waste man hours with the Porta Nailer.I would just skip it and get an air powered nailer.It takes a short while to get use the swing. You want to hit it pretty hard to force the boards together without splitting the toe. You can build your floor with a nice finish nailer, but the cleat is much sturdier. Senco cleats from your local hardware works great. You don't need to wait two weeks for the Bostitch.It jammed several times and that required me stopping my work to fix the jam. At this point, with my floor half installed it has jammed to where I can't fix it, therefor, I can't finish the floor with it. It wasn't super expensive, but it did ultimately become a waste of money. Maybe someone else will have better luck than I.I'm still not use to the ratchet drive yet. Jindrich Zapletal 4.0 out of 5 stars The ease and speed of a pneumatic tool would have been an expensive overkill. There is a ratchet mode that allows driving the cleats with multiple short blows. I had to practice for some time before getting the gist of it, but after that nearly every cleat was driven perfectly. The two hex keys that came with the tool did not fit, but I did not need to use them anyway.I used the recommended supplies it just didn’t seem to help.As long as you don’t mind inhaling it every now and then.No misfires. No problems. Nice storage case. The ratcheting feature makes driving cleats much easier than by single blow: one tap to set the cleat and then a quick slam to drive it home. In the beginning the operation seems a little hard and tiring but that’s more a matter of technique than anything else. A few suggestions--on your first course near the wall, only use a half-stack of nails so you can get closer to the wall without hitting it; keep an eye on how well the nail is driven in so that the next course fits tightly (you will have a nail set with you at all times); use a piece of plywood when nearing the end wall so that you don't wreck the wall swinging the hammer. I jammed it once about 100 nails in (my fault) and it was easy enough to take apart and clear the jam. Living room and hall are done, the bedroom is next!Would easily purchase again and would highly recommend. The one thing I would mention is be ready to REALLY hit it in order to drive the nail. I'm 6'2, 230lbs and a former college wrestler. The amount of effort to drive a nail in some cases was very difficult.I used the ratchet setting (I couldn't hit it hard enough to drive the cleat home in one hit). I would use one hit to drive the plunger in about two thirds of the way and then a second (harder) hit to drive it home. To keep the nailer from jamming, don't let it move between the two hits. To do that I kept my left foot on the back right corner of the nailer (I'm right handed). My arm did get tired, but I'm very happy with the results.Other than that I think it is safer than the ones with air pump. I only use it to install my own hardwood floor. Please try again This was used on a variety of woods from pine, maple and oak. Used the ratcheting setting to install flooring. It is not as difficult as one may expect. While not effortless, it is as you may imagine substantially quieter than the air mailers. No jams with feed of cleats were problem caused by machine. Had three jams that were easily cleared. These were induced by me while working near wall and trying to not scuff wall area with mallet. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. The cypress is a lot softer then say oak or bamboo but the process is the same for all kinds of both pre-finished and post-finished nail-down flooring. In our particular case, the wood was not finished and required sanding, stain and a clear top coat finish once we were all done. To do this project we probably should have used a pneumatic floor nailer, but since we fell into a really good deal on a pair of Bostitch MFN-201 Manual Flooring Cleat Nailer Kits, we went this route. Weighing in at a hefty 8.6 pounds, the MFN201 flooring nailer has an aluminum die-cast body with rubber bumpers on the sides and front of the tool to make sure that your new floor is protected from any dings and dents from the tool. On the top is an ergonomically shaped rubber grip with a long handle. The long handle is supposed to help reduce fatigue so you don’t have to bend quite as far. The flooring nailer works with 16 gauge “L” -shaped flooring cleats and has a magazine capacity of 120 fasteners. No Mar Foot Plates The Bostitch MFN-201 Manual Flooring Cleat Nailer features both a single hit and ratcheting drive modes. To switch between driving modes, there is a tool-free adjustment that simply requires pulling a pin and repositioning the ratcheting mechanism. The ratcheting drive mode lets you strike the driver multiple times if the cleat is not set flush after the first blow. This is helpful if you are working with harder types of flooring and also when you are trying to tighten up a joint. By using the ratcheting mode we found that it really reduced the need to have to use a nail set to re-set the cleats that were not quite flush. Just as important as the flooring nailer is the included graphite-handled mallet that has several key features that makes doing flooring work easier. To start with, there is a large replaceable no-mar white rubber front face that is used to strike the driver on the floor nailer. Since the oversized face is soft and will not mar the wood floor, it is also useful for tapping a board in place. If a board needs a little more help fitting in, turn the mallet around and use the slightly angled side to tap the edge of the wood into place. We found that by having a multi-use mallet it helped to speed up the floor installation process because we did not have to grab a different tool to set the boards then drive the nails. Testing and Use We found that using the Bostitch MFN-201 Manual Flooring Cleat Nailer was simple and pretty much problem-free. Of course nearly any project related to flooring tends to be back breaking and strenuous. With a daunting task of laying about 2000 square feet of flooring though a four bedroom house, we knew we had our work cut out for us. After a little experimenting, we found that working with a team of three guys was the most productive. We had one guy squaring the ends and cutting the boards to length, one guy laying out the boards on the floor and taking measurements and the last guy going to town nailing. With this combination, and everyone working at a nice steady pace, we were able to put the flooring down pretty quickly. Many times we found that with just a single, solid blow with the mallet on the driver head, that we could set the nail perfectly. Since we had two nailers at our disposal, we left one set in single blow mode and the other in ratcheting. The ratcheting mode we found was helpful when we were working in a tight space and did not have adequate space to make a single, hard hit on the driver head. By using the ratcheting mode, we could take a few small hits and still drive the cleat correctly.
